But let’s face it — nothing lasts forever.

Eventually, you’re going to look at your boat cover or awning and ask yourself the ultimate question: “Can the wizards at Canvasworks fix this, or is it finally time to let it go?”

You’ve been through a lot with that cover. It’s seen summer rainstorms, bird droppings, and maybe a few overly enthusiastic dockings. Before you toss it in the trash or try fixing it with duct tape (please, put the duct tape down!), we’ve put together this checklist. 

Use these signs to help you decide if you need a quick repair from our Cokato shop, or if it’s time to treat yourself to a brand-new, custom-made replacement!

Repair Checklist: We Can Totally Fix That

Before you start mourning the loss of your trusty canvas, check for these minor maladies. If your cover is suffering from any of the following, our team of fabric experts can likely bring it back to life!

1. The Snap Has Snapped (or Missing Hardware) 

Did you pull a little too hard on a stubborn snap, and now half of it is missing? Are your fasteners looking like ancient artifacts rather than functional hardware? Don’t panic! Missing snaps, broken buckles, and bent grommets are some of the easiest fixes in the book. We can pop new hardware on there faster than a loon dives for a walleye.

2. The Case of the Unraveling Seam 

Thread takes a beating from the sun's UV rays over the years. If the fabric itself still looks and feels strong, but the seams are starting to let go and flap in the wind, you’re in luck. Restitching is a very standard repair. We’ll run it through our industrial sewing machines with high-quality, UV-resistant thread to make it as good as new. Just keep in mind, if one seam is going, the rest are getting ready to let go too. We will generally recommend a full restitch to save you time and money. 

3. Small Tears and Punctures 

Did a rogue tree branch jump out at your boat? If you have a small, isolated tear or puncture hole, we can often patch it. A well-placed, professional patch will stop the tear from spreading and restore your cover's structural integrity.

4. Stubborn or Derailed Zippers 

Zippers are the unsung heroes of enclosures, so when they stop working, it can make the enclosure impossible to use. If your zipper is stuck, has missing teeth, or the slider has gone completely off the rails, we can typically replace the zipper entirely. You don’t need a whole new boat enclosure just because one zipper went on strike!

Replace Checklist: It’s Time to Say Goodbye

As much as we love a rescue mission, some canvas is simply beyond saving. If your cover is showing these fatal symptoms, it’s probably time to retire it.

1. The Dreaded "Poke Test" Failure (Dry Rot) 

Here is the ultimate test: find a spot on your canvas that gets a lot of sun exposure. Gently press your thumb into the fabric. If it tears like a wet paper towel or feels stiff and crunchy, it likely has dry rot. If you already have a hole, you can try to tear it further. Sun-rotted canvas will rip easily. Once the sun’s UV rays have broken down the fibers to this point, no amount of stitching can save it. If we try to sew it, the fabric will just shred under our needles. It’s officially time for a replacement.

2. The Incredible Shrinking Cover 

If putting your boat cover on requires the combined strength of three linebackers and a whole lot of colorful language, your canvas has shrunk. Over time, cheaper materials shrink significantly. Severe shrinkage puts massive stress on your windshield, frame, and snaps. A new, custom-measured cover from our canvas experts will save your sanity (and your back).

3. A Mold and Mildew Takeover 

A little bit of mildew can usually be cleaned. But if your canvas looks like a science experiment and smells like a swamp monster’s basement, you have a bigger problem. Deep-set mold literally eats away at the fabric fibers. If the canvas is permanently stained, weakened, and smells funky even after a good cleaning, do yourself a favor and start fresh.

4. It Looks Like a Bear Got to It 

We can easily patch a small hole. But if your awning, boat cover, or SnoCap looks like it went twelve rounds with an angry grizzly bear — featuring massive, jagged rips stretching across multiple panels — the labor cost to piece it back together might rival the cost of a new cover. It’s a better investment to start over with a flawless product.
