As the cold weather sets in and the snow starts to fall, there are two kinds of people. There are those who reach for their warmest blankets and hot cocoa and prepare to hunker down for the season. And then there are those of us who can’t wait to get outdoors and out on the trails where the real fun takes place.

Whether you’re an experienced snowmobiler or you’re new to the sport, there’s nothing like a snowmobile trip to make the most of the snow. At Canvasworks in Cokato, we’re committed to helping Minnesota snowmobilers make the fun last longer with  our high-performance SnoCap trailer covers, the patented SnoCaps Trailer Enclosure. To help you get started this year, we’ve put together this guide to planning your snowmobile trips this season.

Start With a Good Plan

Minnesota has more than 22,000 miles of snowmobile trails in some of the prettiest countrysides in the United States just waiting to be enjoyed. The key to making the most out of your snowmobile adventures is to start with safety.

Follow these steps to make your snowmobile adventure safe and fun this season:

1.    Never Go it Alone.

Decide ahead of time how long you plan to ride, where you’ll be going, and who you’ll be with. Always make sure someone knows your plans so if there’s an emergency, they’ll be able to get you the help you need. If possible, ride with a companion.

2.    Study Your Map Well.

It’s important to understand the lay of the land where you are planning to travel. This allows you to plan out where you will be stopping for rest breaks, overnights and any points of interest nearby.

3.    Plan Ahead.

This year with all of the international travel restrictions, lodging is booking up months ahead of time in many domestic locations. Keep a list of lodging located near snowmobile trails you plan to use on hand and call to book your rooms as early as possible.

4.    Pace Yourself.

It can be tempting to throw yourself into a tour and go all day long. But pacing yourself can make for a more rewarding experience, whereas overdoing it can cause you to become exhausted and subject to making dangerous errors in judgement.

In addition to the above tips, here is a list of important items you don’t want to forget when packing for your trip:

●        Extra charging USB cables and remote phone chargers

●        Spare gloves and socks

●        Spare goggles

●        Plenty of water and Gatorade

●        Waterproof matches in a plastic bag

●        Hand Warmers

●        Compass

●        First aid kit
